This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In a "In a Girl Who Owns a City", a ten-year old girl emerges as a leader when a fatal virus kills everyone over the age of 12. Since I teach 9 and 10 year old children, this book really hits home with my kids. It's also wonderful in that the heroine is a girl who makes decisions and stands up for herself and her convictions.
Reading books without pictures is my goal as a librarian in East Harlem., I work to guide children away from comics/graphic novels (which ARE fun).
But those books show the illustrations. Reading a novel together in class without illustrations, allows them to realize that their own imagination is infinitely better.
I've been a librarian going on 4 yrs now. I've seen the growth of nearly all my students being excited to see the new batch of books that arrive. So many students come into our library before school begins to look on the shelves, sit and read while having breakfast or coming in just for a hug and a chat. I've created a wonderful safe space and I'm thrilled.
