This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One day, the tablet may replace classroom texts and book bags. This growing trend in technology makes learning more dynamic. The challenge my dance students face is that they are unable to view dance related videos from our cafeteria, so instruction is verbal where most students are visual learners.

Many dance students come from low income families, are English language learners, and are a part of the special education program.

Since our school is a charter school, we have the luxury of maintaining our elective programs, and this year, dance is new to our school. The students enjoy dance and are truly interested in leaning new dance styles, characteristics, and the history of dance. Our elective program is what separates our school from the majority, as most are unable to maintain these special programs in today's economic crisis.

My Project

The Samsung Galaxy Tablet will allow the students to watch examples of dance routines ranging from the historical dances such as medieval dance, to the dance styles of the times: shuffling, krumping, popping and locking. Students will also be able to follow dance tutorials to learn new dance steps. Teaching without the capability of these visuals is not only complicated, but doesn't give the students the benefit of learning visually and it doesn't allow for modifications for students who may not be coordinated dancers, are special education students, or English language learners.

With most schools phasing electives out of the school curriculum, our school is doing its best to maintain special classes.

Students need relief throughout the day to creatively express themselves and break free from the daily lectures, book work, and writing tasks. For many students, sitting in a desk all day is really hard to do. Students will get so much more out of the dance class by viewing dance routines and watching performances then they currently do verbally and through pictures.
