This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bring history, current events, and science to the South Bronx! My students love social studies & science but our class's materials are too high for them to read independently. Help us access real life science, current events, and the history of this country with these reading & writing materials.

My students are in Kindergarten and First grade, in a Self-Contained Special Needs Bridge Class.

We are struggling academically, socially, and emotionally, but already are showing much progress. They are trying their best to work together with partners, in small groups, and to stay attentive in order to learn new material. As a whole, my class is performing far below grade-level, and it is my goal to help them achieve big things this year! This project will also allow collaboration between my Special Needs class with another General Education class. Students can work with partners from both classes, and encourage collaboration between teachers.

My Project

My students love science and social studies and I want to incorporate more reading and writing in these areas, helping us reach our goal of making 1.5 years of growth in all areas, regardless of what level they start on. Because of their current levels and special needs, at times they become frustrated when they cannot access the provided materials in core content areas because the reading level of the materials are too high. I often spend much time and effort rewriting materials so that they are differentiated for my students. Scholastic News will not only make teaching more than one grade more successful in my classroom, but provides activities that combine reading and writing with grade specific content. This will help students use their love of science and social studies to improve reading and writing skills because interest is high. Scholastic News incorporates current events and science that makes a real-life connection for students who can often feel isolated.

This project will help my students make connections between the past and present, while increasing vocabulary and improving their reading and writing skills.

Our class has big goals and this is one way we can work towards achieving them. Help my students become well-rounded individuals and maintain their interest in science and social studies, regardless of their disability, level, and status.
