A Structured Movement Class To Promote Self-Regulation
Help me give my students the opportunity to participate in a structured movement activity that would help them develop self-awareness, gross motor skills, attention, focus, and a self-paced break during a specific time during the school day.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students attend a school in a low-income community in the City of New York. This special education community provides support services to these students, their conditions range from mild to severe medical conditions and developmental disabilities. The students in this school require structured instruction with a number of support systems, including assistive technology, individual para-professionals, and related services (Occupational, Physical, and Speech therapy) to name a few.
This project that includes the Yoga mats will make a huge difference in the learning of my students because incorporating active structured breaks during the day will allow the students the opportunity to learn about personal space, and shared attention, and at the same time they are learning to imitate basic developmental movements that otherwise will be limited to their therapy sessions.
These resources will greatly contribute to the student's sensory integration and regulation, therefore will be more "ready to learn"
