A Strong First Language

Help me give my students the Bilingual Emergent Readers they need to build a strong first language while learning English. Research has proven that a strong first language helps students become proficient in their second or third language.

My Students

Kind, hard working and disciplined are three adjectives that come to mind when people think of my ESL students. They live in a small town with one elementary school. Many of them live in the same mobile home park in the middle of our town. They all know each other, play together at the park and shop at the same stores. Many of them are US citizens but most of their parents are not. They have been taught to be kind and helpful to each other. They don't compete in the classroom...they cooperate.

My Project

These bilingual books will be "checked out" from my classroom library to students whose families don't read in English. These families value their children's education and want to be engaged in their learning. But, if you don't speak or read in English, how can you can help?

Great Question!

The answer is...read to your child in their first language.

Parents will be able to cozy up with a book they can read to their children at home. This builds a bridge between families and school. That's a big deal!

Research suggests that high quality family engagement begins with families feeling connected to the school. Giving value to their first language helps make that connection stronger. Research also suggests that reading to your child at home builds stronger readers and stronger families.

I am asking donors to contribute to not only my school-based language program but also to the building of families and readers!
