Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We really have something special at our school! I know everyone loves their kids, but we really have a close knit group of caring, bright, tenacious students who I know will go on to do amazing things! I feel very fortunate to be able to work with them!
Many of our kids are first generation college students who are eager to be successful in life, despite any personal hardships they may have had to overcome.
Our school population is seventy-percent economically disadvantaged and sixty-percent Hispanic. Although our area is technically a suburb of Houston, much of our district is still very rural with a lot of poverty. Our program has students taking college classes as early as freshman year, which allows them the opportunity to be able to graduate at the end of four years with both their high school diploma and an Associate's degree. Doing so requires students to have a strong work ethic and a lot of discipline. It is a tremendous feat that truly requires a village of support!
My Project
Last year we were able to get some sports equipment (mostly balls) funded for students to use during lunch and off periods. I am very happy to say that they use this equipment all the time and throughout the day! But, we are currently have an issue figuring out where to store this equipment and still have it be accessible to the students. A great solution would be to get something portable that locks where equipment can be moved to where it is needed and is more convenient for students to quickly grab.
By providing them sports equipment, we are trying to reverse the negative trend of inactivity in our students and get them up and moving, even if it’s only for 10-20 minutes at a time.
I'd like to purchase a Portable Ball Locker that could be pushed into the hallway near the cafeteria for easy access during the day and then pushed back in the office for safely storing them overnight. That way the students can just come grab whatever equipment they need when they want to use it, then bring it back when they are done.
Last year was tough with Hurricane Harvey and a lot of change, so we're doing everything we can to make our school have the best learning environment possible!
