Our state is surrounded on 3 sides by oceans. My students are currently experiencing the greatest oil spill disaster in our nations history. It is imperative that they understand the consequences that human actions have on our oceans.
My students are second year, honors marine science students who have a solid background knowledge of marine science.
They are juniors and seniors in an urban high school. They have selected to enroll in the Marine Science II course because they are very interested in the oceans and have a love of marine science. They are often involved in activities outside of school such as beach cleanups and ocean education outreach projects. Many of them are planning on pursuing careers in the field of marine science.
My Project
My students need 1 Oil spill bio-remediation kit and 1 Ocean Trash Can kit to conduct experimentation on prevention and clean up of ocean pollution. The resources that you will provide for us will allow my students to gain an understanding of the effects that drilling for oil in the ocean may have on the marine environment and our economy. My students will explore a non-toxic, minimally invasive method of using microbes that consume oil for cleaning up oil spills.
The resources will also enable them to simulate the problems associated with other types of anthropogenic marine pollution such as acid rain and plastics. As a part of this project my students will take on roles of newspaper staff members as they create a newsletter about ocean resources, pollutants, effects, and present laws. They will share these newsletters with other environmental and marine science students.
Students will work cooperatively to propose actions to reduce the problem of ocean pollution.

Students will gain important knowledge and experiences from this project that will allow them to make critical decisions as voting citizens in their future. That will impact not only their lives, but the lives of many others.
