My students need varying sensory items to assist them in processing their sensory needs. The swings are to provide vestibular movement and input for my students. The lights are to provide a calming environment for them.
My students face each day with a new set of challenges. They face each day with attempting to process the world around them. We are a small school in rural Arkansas. My students range from Kindergarten to sixth grade. Our class is the self-contained classroom where each student has varying abilities that I strive each day to meet.
My goal is to create a sensory room that can be a place my students can go throughout the day to decompress and regroup so they can face the rest of the day.
This sensory room would allow my students to continue to develop and to be the best they can be as an individual. My students are eager to learn and grow when provided with opportunities that meet each of their varying needs.
My Project
The sensory room is a place that has the lights turned down, is quiet and allows the students to take necessary breaks throughout their day at school. Bright lights and loud sounds can be overwhelming for students with special needs. Sensory swings, sensory lights, sensory toys and soft flooring will allow them to reorganize their nervous system by receiving the sensory input that they need and crave.
The sensory room that is being created will be a place for present and future students to "escape".
The sensory room will provide a safe place for these students to "escape" when their minds and bodies are overwhelmed. Most importantly it provides each student with a place to learn to use their senses through hands-on experience.
