A Soft Place to Land on a Bumpy Day

My Students

Students need more than the 3-R's (reading, 'riting & 'rithmetic). We know that social/emotional skills are also important. Sometimes, as children are learning and mastering new self-regulation skills they need a quiet place to reset. Not so different from adults who may excuse themselves to go to the restroom for a few minutes to pull themselves together.

I would like to build an under-the-table-fort in my space so that any student who needs a quiet space for a few moments can have that time and space to get back on track.

My Project

I want to 'build' an under-the-table-fort (with the use of a pre-made table skirt, curtains, a rug, etc.) that students can access when they become disregulated. I want them to have a place to regroup until they are able to rejoin their classroom successfully. Building this space under an existing table makes it more practical for a small space and less costly to build.

Having the time and space to take a moment is something that adults use to self-regulate on a daily basis but students do not usually have this option.

Each classroom has a soft space for students but sometimes they need a little more space, time and quiet and that's what we hope to build outside of the classroom.
