My students need Common Core novels of Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry to read & analyze during summer school. I chose this novel because it meets the standards & offers many opportunities for non-fiction tie-ins.

My Students
I teach summer school ELA to seventh & eighth graders in Iberia Parish. These are students who are seeking a second chance to "get it right." Many if these students come from low-socio-economic backgrounds. Most often I find that it's not that they don't KNOW the material, it's just that they don't show they know it in the traditional way. These students are often overage students who yearn for someone who cares, believes in them, & the opportunity to prove they can be successful.
My Project
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry will be used to teach my summer school students the required standards that they missed throughout the regular school year. Students will read the novel, identify critical literary elements, conduct close reading, and conduct research about the time period.
Students will also engage in literary circles & Socratic seminars.
Socratic seminars & literature circles allow students the opportunities to use higher order thinking, debate issues, & revise and edit responses. These techniques also allow me to challenge student thinking while determining students' understanding of the concepts to offer alternative grades, rather than traditional paper & pencil tests.
