Help me give my students calming blue light filters to help reduce the fluorescent glare and reduce the overwhelming sensory input of our classroom lights so that they may remain in our inclusive classroom.
I teach in a K-5 Resource/Behavioral Classroom. There are currently 40 students being served in our classroom. Each student has an individualized program focusing on academic and behavioral needs. The staff works to create an inviting classroom that stresses a strong sense of community where students learn safety, responsibility and respect. Many of the children are homeless or come from highly mobile families, so it is imperative that we make the most of our time with them. We are working to create an atmosphere of both support and challenge each day.
Engaged, determined, energetic; my students are eager to learn and be successful.
They love to practice their skills in a variety of modalities, playing games, using manipulatives and using repetition in order to learn to mastery. It is our goal to help each of them be prepared to enter the world ready to take on any challenge.
My Project
Students with sensory difficulties often find working under the super bright light of classroom fluorescent lights to be overwhelming. They are already dealing with the loud buzz of the lights, then add in the glare off of every piece of furniture in the room. Installing calming blue light filters over the lights will help ease the sensory overload when working in an inclusive setting. Our classroom works to remove the sensory issues so that students can put forth their best effort to learn, regardless of any sensory, cultural, or learning issue that they might be facing. Teaching this group of diverse students has helped me to look carefully at every possible accommodation that I can make to help them learn to the best of their abilities and improve their self confidence.
