The students I have the privilege of teaching come from diverse backgrounds and have diverse learning styles. We are a magnet school with more than three quarters eligible for free or reduced lunch. My students are from more than 18 different countries;some have learning disabilities in addition to being English as a New Language.
My aim is to create a flexible space to take our school library from an outdated room with books to a true learning commons.
Often, my students will come in during lunch and just need a space to decompress and relax for a while. I am proud that my school’s LGBTQ students have spread the word that our library is a safe space for them to gather and be accepted. I want to provide flexible soft seating where students can gather and relax, read, collaborate and congregate! Books can be windows and mirrors, and my students need flexible seating to complete the space in which they find them.
My Project
After a long, hard morning of learning and focusing, often in a crowded classroom, some of my students are looking for a safe and quiet place to relax, read and dream without the noise of the cafeteria. It is my goal to provide that space in our library with flexible soft seating.
Our school has a small but vocal LGBTQ+ community, and they enjoy coming to the library at lunch because they consider it their "safe place where no one gets judged." I'm honored to provide that place for them.
Having comfortable and flexible seating with provide not only a nice place to sit but also the ability to be easily moved. If a student wants to join in a group chat, they can pull a chair over, and if they need some "me time" they have the option to pull it into a cozy corner. I am requesting eight bean bag chairs with which to create our library Safe Space.
