I am a second-year kindergarten to second-grade special education teacher. I have 9 students in my classroom who have academic, social, emotional, communicative, behavioral, and sensory needs.
My students have behavioral needs and, when in an escalated state, exhibit unsafe behaviors.
We are a low-income, high needs school. I hope to provide my classroom with a safe way to store items. In many of my students escalation processes, they will throw items that are out and available/accessible. This can range from small play food items to large tubs of toys. In my classroom picture, this shows what a typical escalation can result in, where most items out and available were thrown across the room. With the storage locking cabinet, these items can be “out of sight, out of mind” to help keep all of my students safe and favorite classroom items from being broken or damaged. This would greatly help my students find more appropriate behaviors in their escalation with the removal of access to throwing unsafe items.
My Project
This storage locking cabinet will help to ensure a safe classroom and learning environment for all of my scholars, especially those with behavioral needs.
My students have behavioral needs that can result in them throwing or breaking classroom items.
Any item that is out and accessible is viable to be thrown or broken. In my classroom, we have removed access to many items, but have run out of storage space. In my classroom picture, it can be seen what an escalation from one of my students can look like. In this situation, my classroom environment becomes unsafe, and all other students must be removed in what we call a “room clear.”
With the items being locked away, it removes access to my students throwing unsafe items and gives us an opportunity to teach them safer ways to move through their behavioral-escalation process. This allows for other students to feel safe in addition to being able to stay in the classroom to learn without interruption or fear of their own safety.
