Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse linguistic, educational, and cultural backgrounds but they all have one thing in common: a strong desire to learn English.
I strive to make my classroom a caring, supportive environment that welcomes and supports students of all backgrounds, but academic support alone cannot provide all they need.
The stresses of learning a new language and living in a new country can be overwhelming. In addition, many of my students have experienced homelessness or trauma which makes the new academic tasks even more challenging.
My Project
These materials will help me set up a corner in my classroom where students can take a "brain break." The corner will give students the opportunity to sit comfortably and engage their mind in something non-academic.
For those students who have experienced trauma, a quiet space to take a break can be critical to reducing potential triggers.
All of the items in this cart will help with stress-reduction and relaxation.
Those who are artistically inclined will use the gel pens or white boards to create and frame their artwork for display in and out of the classroom. Those who benefit from listening music will find respite from the classroom using noise blocking headphones. Those who simply need to release anxiety can have a separate, organized, and comfortable place to do so.
The products in this cart will ensure that our space stays sustainable for the entire year, and that the activities available in the space can be practiced by the whole class before students try them out independently.
