This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When my school hosts an evening event, like a movie night or a literacy night, to foster community, I am thrilled to see the amazingly close-knit, multigenerational families in attendance supporting our students and our school, but that is not the case for all of our students. Many students are not receiving the level of emotional care and encouragement that a young child needs.

Even when they are faced with challenging hardships, my English Learners are inquisitive and eager to learn.

Through songs, stories, poems, and plays, they are exploring real-world events that they may not have had an opportunity to experience firsthand due to their familial and socioeconomic backgrounds. They love to learn, and I love to assist them in doing so.

My Project

The instructional focus for my English Learners is oracy, the ability to express oneself in and understand spoken language, so we spend a lot of time on our rug developing vocabulary. As a whole group, we define words, read examples of the words from a mentor text, and then practice using the words in a sentence frame.

Students enjoy sitting on a rug to listen to stories.

We take pauses for reflection, and students turn and talk to a peer to about story elements and structure. This would be a more comfortable experience if students had a clean rug with large designated personal spaces as our rug is old and beginning to fray.

Because we have carved out a reading nook in the school library, my students do not have access to a pencil sharpener which affects how efficiently they are able to complete activities.
