The instructional focus for my English Learners is oracy, the ability to express oneself in and understand spoken language, so we spend a lot of time on our rug developing vocabulary. As a whole group, we define words, read examples of the words from a mentor text, and then practice using the words in a sentence frame. Students enjoy sitting on a rug to listen to stories. We take pauses for reflection, and students turn and talk to a peer to about story elements and structure. This would be a more comfortable experience if students had a clean rug with large designated personal spaces as our rug is old and beginning to fray. Because we have carved out a reading nook in the school library, my students do not have access to a pencil sharpener which affects how efficiently they are able to complete activities.
