My students need a carpet on which they each have their own place to sit, and books that can capture their imagination for read-alouds and listening stations.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kinder students need their personal space! They want to pay attention to the books that are being read, and to the letters and sounds and numbers they are learning. Having their own space on a rug helps to minimize distractions caused from being squished up against others.
My incoming kinder students are young!
For many of them, this is their first experience of school, and they are just learning what school is. Being in a classroom and having high expectations on them to learn new things for several hours a day is a big challenge for four and five year olds.
They live in an inner city neighborhood and come from diverse cultural backgrounds. Many of them come from unstable homes, so when they get to school, it is a consistent environment, a place where they can feel safe. The students who come from the most unstable homes have boundary issues. In school they will learn about appropriate boundaries, so that they can begin to develop a sense of identity. Having a rug with individual places to sit is ideal. Creating a cheerful and inspiring environment goes a long way to enhance their sense of safety and trust. They need to be engaged and to be given the best chance possible to succeed.
My Project
Having a colorful and cheerful rug brightens up the whole room to make it more kid friendly. Being in a bright and colorful environment helps students love to be in school. It raises their self esteem because they have evidence that an effort has been made to make their learning experience an inspiring one. Not only will the rug create an upbeat environment in the entire room, but during whole class time on the rug, each student will have their own place to sit, without having to be jammed up against others. This is incredibly helpful in minimizing distractions.
Additionally, the rug has letters and pictures to reiterate the alphabet and their corresponding letter sounds. I can imagine my students looking for the rabbit square when they want to see what letter makes the rrr sound. The classic Dr. Seuss book collection are favorites, and students never tire of looking at them. My early readers are delighted when they can recognize some of the words, like c-a-t, and h-a-t.
I want to start this school year off right with a classroom I love to be in.
I know that when I love to be in a bright, cheerful, and inspiring space, my students will love to be there, too. Kindergarten is officially the first year of school. It is important to give students as positive an experience as possible so that they can begin to develop a love of school, and a love of learning. I want all of my students to start their academic education on the right foot.
