Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is my 12th year teaching, and my current students are some of the best I have ever had. This year I am an Academic Intervention Teacher working with seniors who are at-risk of not graduating. Most of my students are ESOL (English as a Second Language) or SPED (Special Education). I help them complete their PARCC English projects and recover credits for classes they did not pass. Seniors in my state this year must pass the English PARCC test (a national standardized test) in order to graduate; if they do not pass the test, students must complete an English PARCC project for academic validation.
Although my students are hardworking, kind, and resilient, they face many obstacles that are outside of the school's control; for example, over 55% of our students are economically disadvantaged--the percentage is closer to 80% when only considering the students in my classes.
Considering their socioeconomic and academic struggles, my students would benefit incredibly from a peaceful, welcoming classroom. We would really appreciate any help and consideration!
My Project
Because the course I am teaching is new to the state this year, we had to be creative about finding a space for my students. Therefore, I was assigned a room that used to be a storage room. As a result, my classroom doesn't have any windows. I have worked hard to make it an inviting space, but it could be even better.
My students often have challenging backgrounds, so it is important for me to create a welcoming, peaceful classroom.
I heard about these cloud-like light covers/filters for florescent lights, and I think they would really help make the room even more inviting for students. They are often used in hospitals and therapy centers because they are known for their soothing effect. I know my students would love to have these in our classroom, and the new light covers would help lead to positive learning outcomes.
