My school is culturally, racially, and socieconomically diverse. I teach 4 on-level classes (on-level meaning there are several students with special needs and they are taught a non-honors curriculum with a special education co-teacher present in the classroom). Of my 110 juniors, 75% are Latino and African American males. The research reflects my experience in that many of my students walk into my classroom thinking they are bad readers and that they hate reading. One of my goals is to show my students that all literature is accessible to them if they invest the attention and dedication needed to engage with a text. Although on the surface many of my students seem like a reluctant learners, they are not. They have a strong desire to learn and to make their families and community proud.
