Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fifth grade in a small Title One elementary school in Los Angeles. My students are predominantly from working class families. Almost 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch and about half have been designated as English Learners.

Due to the large population of English learners in Los Angeles, the emphasis of the school district has been to focus on teaching children HOW to read instead of on WHY they should read. For the past several years, my fifth grade classes have read from a prescribed themed anthology comprised largely of bland and lackluster 5-10 page excerpts. This format was mandated by the school district in 2002. In order to make the situation more palatable, some great books need find their way into their hands. With your help, I would like to introduce them to one of the books which had a profound impact on me as a young reader, "To Kill a Mockingbird."

I want the students to really experience this book and be taken back to a time and a place where big brothers could solve the universe's problems in an instant and all the treasures of the world could be contained in a cigar box.

Your help would bring to life this classic for my students. By donating to this project, you are ensuring that Atticus Finch in his quiet dignity and all of the other residents of Maycomb, Alabama will leave an impression upon my students as they venture out beyond the walls of my classroom.
