Have you ever had a bad day? Every day, many of the students in our building come to school with heavy burdens on their shoulders. Our students face trauma, poverty, depression, family issues, mental health issues, and so much more. It has been estimated that 17 million students face psychiatric illnesses, but only about half will receive treatment. These kiddos come to our classrooms every day without their basic mental health needs met and are in the crucial process of learning how to cope with, adapt, and relate to others and the world around them. As teachers, we must be ready to help ALL our students!
The good news is that ALL of these students have all the potential to thrive, excel, and become leaders of tomorrow!
These students need to know that they have a place in which they belong and that their teachers believe in them TODAY. Our staff deeply cares about all our students' academic and social needs. The money that you are generously offering is not going to one single classroom and teacher, but to an entire building of 400+ students to help build a safe place for meaningful mental health support.
My Project
Our student population includes children with anxiety, autism, and/or sensory processing disorders. These students can come to calm their bodies and/or activate their bodies to be more successful in the classroom. We also have students that struggle with emotional disturbance and often take their anger out on peers or teachers. It is okay to feel angry, but how we can teach children to express that anger in an appropriate manner? How can we best help them? By allowing them to feel and express their emotions in a prosocial manner!
Our regulation room will have a punching bag, sensory tiles, stress balls, and other sensory tools for students that need to express themselves in a physical manner.
These students will be able to return to the learning environment with their bodies and minds regulated and ready to learn!
The punching bag and slam balls provided through this project will make a huge difference in making this idea a reality. Your consideration is not just help for one teacher, one classroom. It is a godsend for an entire building for years to come. If we can help these children learn how to regulate their minds and bodies, it would not only have a lasting effect for that one student, but for the entire community! Thank you so much for your consideration.
