Our staff cares deeply about all our students. Imagine comforting a child who is struggling with memories of a family member's suicide... in the busy hallway. Or the counselor trying to calm a student who is angry about his parents' divorce.. in a small office. Or teaching a classroom of students while trying to assist a student with mental health issues regulate his or her emotions. These are the challenges we are faced with every day. Donations for this project will improve our school and classrooms by allowing students to receive the emotional support they require to be successful in the learning environment. Our school's sensory room will be used by all staff and students for a wide variety of purposes including: -relationship development between students and staff members. -a safe location to assist a student in crisis (anxious, agitated, or at risk of losing control) before they require severe behavioral interventions. -a location for students to use sensory tools (swing, weighted blanket, etc.) to regulate their bodies so they will be ready to learn in the classroom. -a calm location for teachers, counselor, or others to conduct small group discussions to reduce conflict and role-play solutions to social issues. -opportunities for students to listen to calming music in a comfortable, home-like area while engaging in calm, quiet activities such as coloring, puzzles, reading, drawing, and/or legos. (this can be essential for children from stressful homes to find activities that can calm their bodies) -a calm, safe location for teachers, counselors, and other staff to build social-emotional learning skills by engaging the students in activities that teach self-help skills such as self-regulation, positive self-talk, and more! This can lead to fewer behavioral problems and create students that are confident, independent, and have keen self-awareness of their own emotional needs!
