This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a low-income, high poverty school district. The students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Our students come from many different cultures and backgrounds. Some of our students never had any formal education prior coming to our school.

Providing students with a strong foundation is extremely important in the beginning years of school.

Our students come to school eager to learn and want to perform well in their class. Having the appropriate tools and resources helps engage student learning in all areas.

I am a Special Education teacher and teach students from ages 5-10 years olds. They come to the resource room due to their learning disabilities/ dyslexia ( reading and math )and struggle with basic phonics and number sense.

My Project

Reading is something we do everyday. 80% of people have no problem with the written word, however, the other 20% have language processing issues. The 20% of people that cannot process language properly need to and should be taught differently. The Barton Reading & Spelling program is a step by step system that allows students to master a variety of skills and use those skills to master more. Level 1 through 8 would allow me to target specific skills that my students are lacking. Once they master a set of skills they can continue through the program until they have mastered the written English language.

The Dyslexic students that sit in my classroom would benefit from the Barton Reading & Spelling program because it would give them the tools they need to read and understand the English language.

Other struggling students would also benefit from this program because it can address individual needs. My goal is to create life long learners and I feel like this program would assist me on my journey.
