A Rainbow With a Seat for Everyone

Help me give my students bench cubbies and a color-coded carpet so every child has a spot to sit, a place for their things, and a classroom where they know exactly where they belong.

My Project

Every piece of this project has a job waiting for it in our new classroom. The giant rainbow carpet will become the heart of our room, our gathering place for Morning Meetings, mini-lessons, and read-alouds. Its color-coded sections give every child their very own spot, so instead of wandering, bumping and squabbling over places, my students can find their color and be ready to learn in seconds. The two bench cubbies do double duty along our walls: sturdy seating on top for reading and partner work, and cubby storage underneath so backpacks, folders and materials each have a home. Like everything in our room, these pieces are classroom-grade and built to serve many years of first graders, not just this one.

In first grade, knowing exactly where you belong is the first step to learning.

Six and seven year olds thrive on routine and structure, and something as simple as a designated carpet spot removes a dozen tiny conflicts and decisions from every transition. When the wondering stops, the learning starts faster: smoother transitions, calmer bodies and more minutes of actual instruction every single day.
