A Quiet Space... Calming Area For Preschoolers With Autism

Help me give my students a calming sensory wall panel to increase sensory integration, fine motor, and cognitive skills as well as a room divider to help create a calming and interactive sensory area within the classroom.

My Students

I work with preschoolers with a wide range of disabilities including intellectual disabilities, autism, and developmental delays including fine motor delays and sensory processing issues. Many also qualify as being socially at-risk due to life situations including poverty.

My students love coming to school to play and learn to communicate and interact with the world around them through fun and engaging, pre-academic, sensory, and social emotional activities.

They are in need of fine and gross motor development and sensory input in the classroom environment. They are bright and curious and it is a joy to work with them every day!

My Project

Materials for this project will be used to add to the ongoing creation of a calming sensory space within our classroom. The sensory wall panel will provide an additional experience for my young students to engage their senses and fine motor skills, as well as cognitive skills. The room divider will help further separate the space, making it a tranquil calming area for engaging the senses and will promote safety.

The creation of a separate sensory area within our classroom gives my students the opportunity to choose to spend time in this area to meet their own sensory needs.

They will be able to explore the area and fulfill their sensory needs enabling them to be ready to learn and enjoy their school experience.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
