Where to begin...my students are my educators, my mentors, my push to be a better teacher. I am a Special Education teacher, in a self contained class of 12:1:1 in a Title 1 (low income/high poverty) School. Every day I walk into my classroom I am astonished at how far each of my kids have come. From the selectively mute student, who refuses to speak unless it is to curse-who now is able to ask to use the restroom "May I please use the bathroom Ms.Kamila". To my emotional disturbed students who cannot use words to express themselves and instead result to vandalizing the room and fighting to now ripping up a piece of paper instead to express their anger. To my quiet, sheltered students who are now participating in school plays.
There is no such thing as a bad kid, just young conflicted minds trying to express their needs and wants without structure or guidance and that is what we as educators are here to accomplish.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to foster their needs for learning. Given that my class consists of 12 students of diverse needs as well as consisting of a bridge class of Kindergarten, First grade, and Second grade it is difficult to offer them the same type of learning experiences and in this case the same type of seating arrangements. For example my Kindergarten kids must sit in a chair which allows both feet to be placed on the ground, however if I have the same type of chairs for all my students my Second graders would be severely uncomfortable.
"Fair isn't everyone getting the same, fair is everyone getting what they need to be successful".
In this case it is as simple as providing them with various seating arrangements to promote their best learning ability. When people are comfortable they are able to focus more on the work presented to them, this is further confirmed when applied to children and even more so when applied to those with disabilities.
Please help me, help them be the best version of themselves.
