My Students

Do you love to draw, but sometimes want your artwork to be more than just flat paper? Would you like to transport your artwork to a world of fantasy and imagination? Draw and create your own three dimensional characters. Design a doll or puppet based on a real person or a character you imagine.

My students are in elementary school and range from grades two through five.

They've been selected to participate in Jefferson Parish Schools' Talented in Visual Arts Program. They qualified by passing a rigorous screening process in which portfolios were evaluated by committees, and testing was conducted by artists contracted by the parish. I teach many immigrant children, and children whose families are still recuperating from the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Many class discussions involve choice of subject matter, and the historical and environmental impacts of said subjects. Louisiana schools stress the importance of protecting the environment, especially our fragile coastline, and waters through which our fishing industry survives.

My Project

The resources I've requested will enable my students to work in a medium other than basic number two pencils and copy paper. Many children's artistic talents truly blossom and show when they're able to work in a three dimensional medium such as clay. They've already shown me what they can do with papier mache' by designing and sculpting masks during the first nine weeks. They first brainstorm by writing descriptions of what they'd like to create. Then they draw the design out as an illustration on paper. Finally they sculpt and paint the mask for display, adding to the design as ideas flow. I've requested molds, clay, and sculpting tools to enable my students to begin creating three dimensional renderings of their doll and puppet designs. I've also requested a small clay-baking oven to permanently harden the pieces once they've been sculpted. We'd also like some of the basic tools necessary for drawing, so we've asked for a class set of drawing pencils, sharpeners, and erasers.

My students love to draw and design projects on paper, but they show a much broader range of talent and development by working in a sculptural medium.

I try to do at least one three dimensional project each nine weeks, giving kids a chance to get their hands dirty and manipulate a pliable material. They love seeing their ideas come to fruition in colorful, touchable, vibrant forms like masks, dolls, and puppets.
