This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is located in a university town in California. Our proximity to the university means that my second graders come from all kinds of backgrounds and have diverse experiences. My class this year is full of exuberance and creativity. As a whole they are curious and love telling stories. Several of my students are English learners or speak more than one language, including English, Spanish, Cantonese and Portuguese.
A few of my students already see themselves not just as story tellers, but as writers.
I hope to help all of my students find the writer within this year. I believe learning to write poetry can help them get there.
My Project
Each year I have been fortunate to co-teach a poetry unit with Maureen Hurley in the spring. Last year half of this residency occurred online due to the pandemic. Despite the challenges from switching from in person to online, my students thrived as writers during our poetry residence with Maureen. They produced a beautiful written poetry book. I am looking forward to bringing the poetry residency to my students this year. I expect it will be one of the highlights of our school year.
In an effort to taylor the poetry residency to the needs of my students, Maureen will work with 2 small groups of 10-11 students for 1 hour per group once a week.
At the end of the residency each student will receive a copy of the published poetry book.
