My students come from every corner of the globe, including the south side of Sacramento. Refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central America, and Laos are among our students. Pacific Islanders, Eastern Europeans, Chinese and African Americans, and Latinos native to the neighborhood round out the population.
The neighborhood is stressed, presenting the same problems seen in any low-income area: violence, gangs, and drugs are among the hazards students live with, and to which, alas, they sometimes succumb.
We are designated a Title I school, with virtually 100% of our students qualifying for free or reduced-rate lunch. We offer breakfast and "supper" too. I'm proud of my school and my colleagues because for the most part we are here for our students and are willing to work hard for them.
My Project
Pastels give a richness of vibrant color and they blend like no other medium! I have some sets of oil pastels, which now mostly consist of broken pieces cobbled together from a dwindling supply of well-used sets. These oil pastels require turpentine for thinning, blending, and cleanup.
Water-soluble oil pastels will allow us to thin and blend colors when desired with just water-- no toxic turpentine is needed, and cleanup is easier too!
Yet the colors are rich, thick and opaque as the turpentine-soluble pastels.
After weeks of painting, students appreciate the "break" of being able to instantly apply color, without the intermediary of the brush or the need to mix colors beforehand. The blending that pastels are capable of is so easy, and looks utterly professional - Students love the effects they can achieve with this medium.
With pastels, in addition to all the other media your donations have already helped me obtain for my students, my art class can truly be an introduction to the wide world of art, its many, many media and approaches. My students appreciate being exposed to so many ways into the discipline, and I am sure the "something for everyone" approach finds a lasting experience for every student at some point in the course of the year!
