Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher of a Math Intervention course, I get to see students from different grades and different abilities. A connection they share is, from the 6th graders to the 8th graders, they enter the room ready to learn new strategies to help in their core math class.
The class is built to help students below grade level proficiency build basic math strategies that they can utilize in their grade level math class.
Students get a chance to review topics as well as learn new strategies to complete problems. The goal of the class is that by discussing these necessary skills, the students will be able to enter their core math class and be more successful. For example, my 6th graders learned about using the Distributive Property for multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers and the next week their core math class had started to discuss it. To hear from their core teachers that students who typically do not participate due to lack of confidence were raising their hands to answer questions was incredibly heartwarming. These students were coming to class ready to learn more because they saw the positive connection between their core class and our intervention class.
My Project
For this math course, the students have the abilities to use fraction pieces to visualize the fractions that they are comparing or adding. However, the packaging was not conducive to quickly accessing and utilizing the fraction pieces. At the moment, the manipulative is stored in plastic baggies that the students struggle to keep organized. They end up spending more time trying to find the fraction pieces that they need instead of working on assignments.
The goal of getting this storage container is to make the use the fraction piece manipulative more successful for all of the students.
The students and I spent part of class discussing what kind of organizer would work best. The product that we selected has removable dividers which allow for all of the fraction pieces to fit within the box. My students were excited that we were able to find an organizer that meet our needs and cannot wait to be able to use their manipulatives efficiently. I have seen students gain confidence by having access to the fraction pieces when solving problems however our current organization has also caused them frustration. This new organization box will help to eliminate this annoyance and help to foster and further students success in their math class.
