This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This coming year I will be teaching Literature and Film and Advanced Comparative Literature for sophomores in an Early College High School.

One of the biggest hurdles in our school is simply getting students to embrace their role as students. I have had many students over the years who have come to school day after day with absolutely no supplies in hand. How can you really be a student if you just don't feel like one?

A few years ago when I taught freshmen and sophomores, our team of teachers pitched in our discretionary funds and supplied our students with multi-pocket portfolios. They were sleek enough that they didn't feel like big, bulky binders but held a LOT of stuff. It took a lot of coaching to help them keep all those papers organized, but the students slowly realized the value of keeping track of handouts and returned work. Since everyone had a portfolio, anyone who forgot or lost theirs stood out like a sore thumb; it wasn't as easy for a student to sit with nothing on the desk and pretend like it didn't matter. In the last month of this school year, one of those students stopped by to get help for an assignment in one of his college classes. And when he needed to show me the syllabus, guess what he pulled out of his backpack? Yep, the same portfolio he'd received two years ago, only slightly worse for the wear. A week later, I saw that yet another student still had his portfolio in use.

Your help will make it possible for my students to practice valuable organization skills. This isn't just important because they'll be able to find what they need when they need it. It helps to put the kids in the right frame of mind. And when my students take their first college classes in the spring, I'm hoping they'll be able to put their portfolios to good use even when they're off on their own.
