Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in a very diverse district. In our community, families don't have a lot of money to provide children with a lot of extras. The parents work hard just to make ends meet. In fact, many of our students must attend our after-school program so their parents have more time to work. That makes for a long day for my little friends.

My students are an enthusiastic group of second graders in a high poverty community in Northern California.

Many of them are second-language learners. They come to school every day eager to learn. However, sometimes they have a bit too much energy and have difficulty staying still and respecting the personal space of others.

My Project

We meet on the rug several times every day - for morning meeting, math talks, and read aloud. Some students find it difficult to stay in their spot for the duration of the activity. Their little bodies slowly migrate closer to other students or furniture.

We need a large rug with designated spots for each student to help keep my little friends out of the personal space of others.

We need a smaller, colorfully inviting rug in our reading corner, and the solar system theme fits in well at our STEM school. Some friends need bouncy bands for their chairs to help provide a release of energy while seated at their desks. Lap desks will give my students freedom to move to a different location to do their work. And, finally, the stools will provide another seating option in our classroom.
