Our classroom is a place where first graders take responsibility for their own learning. My students explore literacy and problem solving skills in a cooperative community.

Every day, my budding readers discover new ideas about text through the use of interactive read alouds with super sized books. They follow along and hang on every word, connecting text to thought. They ask to revisit favorite books and confirm new thinking, but our big books do not have an accessible place to live in our classroom. Their size makes them perfect for teaching a whole group but impossible to contain on a regular shelf. A simple big book storage box would make a world of difference.

If we had an accessible spot for these jumbo stories, my kids could grab a favorite whenever they were motivated to revisit a particular text. They could take the initiative, like they do in the rest of their learning, to look for answers on their own.

Your contribution will allow students to interact independently with a variety of great books. It will allow them the all important factor of choice and will bring excitement to their reading lives. Students will select familiar big books, gather in a circle of friends, and get lost in a story. Thank you for your consideration.
