Help me give my students these metal stools that will ensure them a place at the table for learning. This will allow them to navigate the learning stations without worrying about if they can find a safe place.
My school is a large community school in the heart of Washington, D.C. Over 60 percent of the students are still mastering the English language. Many of my students receive special accommodations for learning disabilities. Poverty within the surrounding neighborhood is evident. Most of my students come to school with very few if any supplies.
My students struggle with staying engaged with the work, because there are so many other issues in their lives, but they love to learn and even come on Saturdays for extra instructional time!
I employ a variety of techniques to match my instruction to my students' strengths and weaknesses. I make my classroom light and fun to capture and spur their love of knowledge.
My classroom is desperately in need of seating for our stations. We currently have a few stools that fit comfortably around our tables. Students are struggling to find a place to sit when they move from their desk. Our classroom chairs are to big to be moved around. This would allow them to move within the classroom without disrupting the flow of others' learning.
My Project
My students will be able to move within the classroom without worrying about finding a seat. The amount of discussion about placement of chairs and who took who's seat will disappear. Conversations about the learning will be the main focus.
Students need to be involved with different workstations in order to deepen the learning experience.
They will be focused on the task at hand, and discussions about who has whose seat will not allow students to be sidetracked.
The classroom is a very important way that students feel connected, and they need to know that everything in the classroom belongs to them and not just who got the seat at a table first. My students currently have four stools in the classroom, and it is always a race to get to them.
