A Piece of the Puzzle: Creating Independent Learners
My students need Chromebooks to build reading/math skills through web-based interventions. They need phonics kits to learn to read and easy readers for our class library.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students enter the classroom excited and eager to learn each day. They are full of energy and are always anxious for the next, awesome activity. They are genuine, unique, and each learn in their own special way.
My classroom is filled with ten K-2 students who have been diagnosed with Developmental Delays/Behavioral Disabilities and are in a self-contained class.
This means that they need extra guidance and support all day in their learning environment. We are at a low-income, Title 1 school and are lacking the materials we need in order to provide our students with the best opportunity for success.
Currently, my classroom has no working computers, no math manipulatives, no phonics/guided reading materials, and a select few books in our classroom library from my own collection. My students want nothing but to get the most out of school and I want nothing more than to provide them with that. Our ultimate goal to create independent learners.
My Project
Becasue we are a self-contained class for Special Education students, it is important that students experience mostly one-on-one or small group instruction. In order for this to successfully occur, students need stations that are at their skill level to complete on their own while I am working with an individual or small group.
The two Chromebooks would provide students with the opportunity to participate in online reading and math intervention programs to help build upon skills they already have. Various phonics stations will help students to become independent in sounding out unfamiliar words to help build stronger readers.
The books on tape will give my students an opportunity to improve their listening skills as well as follow along in the hard copy of the book. Counters will help my students learn to count, group, recognize 1-to-1 correspondence, and so much more! Lastly, we are severely lacking books in our class library that my students can read - the easy readers are perfect!
My students are in a unique position.
They learn and behave differently than most students and need more hands on support. They are so excited to come into school each day and I know that these materials will just boost their excitement even more. It will also help my students to become more academically independent in math and reading. The goal is to eventually have them transfer back into a general education classroom setting and your donation would be one of the many pieces of this puzzle!
