Every day, as my students line up outside my classroom door, they are all smiles, chatter, and excitement. "What are we doing today, Mrs. C?" Though my students are eager and excited when they walk through my door, they are also nervous about reading and writing. They know our classroom is a safe space, where our community works together, but even armed with this knowledge, they sometimes doubt themselves and their extraordinary abilities.
What my students need, more than anything, is to learn the lesson that we all have learned: we are braver and stronger than we believe, and we are never as alone as we think we are.
My students are incredibly diverse. From military families to immigrants to families who have lived here their whole lives, they bring a variety of experiences to the table. Despite their moments of self-doubt, they are always willing to try hard, ask questions, and take chances.
My Project
Many of my students are below the grade level average for reading and struggle with reading as a skill. They have recently discovered graphic novels and are actually showing excitement about reading, but our school library's graphic novel section is still small and growing.
Graphic novels build confident readers and provide high-interest stories to engage them.
The excitement they feel when reading these "comic" books has led many of them to try new things and begin exploring books that they would never have dreamed of picking up before.
Adding these books to our classroom library would engage a variety of readers and help build their confidence as they explore the world of reading.
