One of the ways that I support my students as emerging readers is by emphasizing their ability to choose things based on their interests. These books, Out of My Mind, Dancing Home, Warp Speed and others, will be used to help students form literature circles based on the books they are most interested in, while also helping us work toward our goal of building tolerance and empathy. In choosing their own books, students will be able to be active learners who set their own paths in reading. The ability to choose their own books will also help them build confidence in their abilities. These books will show my students that despite how different our lives may seem, we all have more in common than we think. These books will help promote conversations about diversity, tolerance, and acceptance that will spill beyond the doorway of our classroom and out into our school as a whole.
