A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words

Help me give my students the canvas to paint their interpretations of literature and expression by intertwining elements of art literacy.

My Students

My students are talented in more ways that one can imagine. I am so elated and blessed to be able to be amongst a talented group of students who bring all elements of the arts into our classroom. They are inquisitive and always looking for the answer to the "why", never accepting that things are the way they are without reason or cause. In the upcoming weeks, we will approach a very dark part of history, the Holocaust. With an idea about what the Holocaust was and what it means in our history, my students are already eager to talk about what has has happened then, what is happening in the world now, and how powerful our voice is in ensuring that we put an end to hatred and violence. I know that with their analytical skills, elaborate discussions, talents and knowledge, that they are going to have an indelible mark in the world.

My Project

Art literacy is a prominent aspect of literature. Our students have a unique way of interpreting and looking at the world through different art forms and often, they want to have a means of expressing themselves that is beyond writing an essay, a poem or a monologue. In an artistic and yet therapeutic way, art literacy grants students the opportunity to develop design-thinking, creativity and critical thinking. In addition to self-expression, art literacy promotes confidence and concentration and deepens their understanding of literature. In addition to creating artwork for themselves, students will be able to connect personally and meaningfully through shared art created by their peers. As a project that will intertwine elements of literature, art, and social activism, students will paint their own interpretation of what liberation feels like based on their understanding of the gift of freedom.
