My Students

Our school is located in New York. This year, my classes have a tremendous amount of new English Language Learners. They are trying to learn our language and keep up with what the English speaking students are doing.

My students are extremely motivated and have to work twice as hard as native English speaking students.

Many of them go home to parents who either do not speak English or are just learning English themselves. Due to this many of them are struggling readers and have tremendous difficult with their writing, especially in using proper grammar.

My Project

My students not only love learning about history, they find our study of the Civil Rights Movement fascinating. The best way for them to learn about this time period is to both hear about it and see pictures of the events. I try to provide them with a variety of sources to learn from, such as books, articles, and videos.

I hear and I forget, I see and I remember... While teaching about the Civil Rights Movement, my students would benefit greatly from both fiction and non-fiction picture books.

Having a nice mix of texts not only makes the topic more interesting, but helps my students understand the era from many different perspectives. They are always extremely interested in this time period and have tons of questions that they cannot wait to answer as we explore these events in our history. Having more books such as the ones listed below will help bring history to life right before their eyes.
