Growing up, I remember posing for endless pictures that now document my childhood. As a second grade teacher in a low-income school (93% of our students receive free or reduced lunch), I want to provide that same experience and excitement for my students -- students who do not have the luxury of cameras, film, and one-hour photo labs. I have often asked students to bring in pictures of themselves at different stages in their lives, and have been amazed at the number of students who are unable to produce a picture. The use of a digital camera, printer, and picture paper in my classroom will allow me to document a year in the life of a second grader. As we learn and explore during this school year, I want to be able to take pictures of my students exploring, working together, and discovering new things and then print them right in the classroom. The students will then use their pictures to write about what they are doing in the picture and what they learned during the experience. At the end of the school year, the students will have created a scrapbook of their second grade year that they can take home and later look back on. My hope is that this technology in the classroom - a camera, printer, and picture paper - will not only provide lasting memories of learning, but will also serve as a springboard for furthering my students' writing skills as they document their learning experiences through creating captions for their pictures.
