A Photo Start

My students need 10 photogate timers to do a variety of motion based labs.

I teach Physics in a low-income school in Oregon. All of my students are Juniors or Seniors who have already taken the other science classes in sequence (Bio and Chemistry). Students who take my class are usually dedicated and focused, but still struggle with the issues surrounding a low-income setting. Many have plans to follow a career in either engineering or physics in college

Motion is the first thing students learn in high school physics. From there, many of the future units are based on the concepts learned about motion. Acceleration, gravity, velocity, momentum, Newton's laws, and projectiles are just a few of the topics that relate to motion. Part of studying the relationships in motion is hands-on labs. Since we are dealing with small distances and short path motion, the most inaccurate part is the timing. When you have to time an objects motion, even a split second delay or head start with a stopwatch can completely ruin data results.

The items I am requesting are called photogates. These are laser timers that start and stop a timer instantly when an object passes through their "gate". Viola! Perfectly accurate timing results! These timers will allow my students more time to focus on data analysis and research, rather than trying to hit the button on the stopwatch at the perfect time.

Your simple act of generosity will enable my students to take their research in the world of physics to a whole new level! Physics is not a class that many students take; it's much less popular than biology or chemistry, which is a shame! By making my class as fascinating and educational as possible, I hope to stear more students toward college and careers in engineering and physics. All thanks to kind folks like you!
