Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Like flowers who eagerly wait for sunlight to bloom, my students are eager learners, who are curious and who want to discover and grow. This is the phrase which describes my students. They desire to be better readers and learners. My students are from mostly low socioeconomic households. Most of them come from homes where Spanish is the first language. A majority of their parents speak English; however, there are several families who only speak Spanish. As a result, students must rely on an older sibling or relative who speaks English to help them with homework and reading assignments.
Our school is also in a lower social economic neighborhood.
Most live in small rented apartments, and their parents work in low paying jobs. Many students have become eligible in the past for donations of shoes and new backpacks, which indicate the level of economic need many of them are faced with. We do not have a PTA in our school. As such we do not have the help of parents to organize together and fundraise for the school. We, however, have a parent center, where parents contribute with their time.
My Project
The purpose of these chair sacks is to replace the ones I have, which are worn out. Students will be using these sacks to organize and store the books they are reading in class. These sacks will also provide a place for students to store their headphones which they will use during technology time as well as room to store their phonics phones. Providing this sack for my students will help them keep track of their materials and provide them a go to place where they can access easily the books, they which will be reading throughout the week. Having this organizational tool will definitely help them run their book clubs more efficiently as well.
