My students are stellar. They take honors and advanced placement classes. They are hardworking, creative, and inquisitive. They teach me every day!
Many students in my classroom come in saying they have difficulty completing assignments at home because of lack of supplies; I load digital resources but they'd much prefer to have actual books.
Our school is nestled in between Charles Drew University and Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital. We are a Title I school with amazing students who rise to every challenge even with minimal resources.
Students will have an opportunity to see varying perspectives of US History by reading A People’s History of the United States, Howard Zinn (1980). This presents the same information with a dramatically alternate narrative about the conclusions and motivations discussed in the course textbook. Students need lots of practice with different points of view to prepare for the AP* US History exam. Students will read the corresponding chapters with their textbook and note the differences in perspective so they can practice writing about the different belief of the same content.
Over the past several years, students writing scores have hurt them on the AP* Exam.
I've taken the advice of more successful teachers and added Howard Zinn to the curriculum. The students are now required to identify the differenced in perspective regarding, social, political, economic, religious, and technology. They are to hypothesize why the texts focus or different aspects of US History, and omit others. Thank you for your kindness.
