Help me give my students an Aerogarden and growing pods, to grow edible and non-edible plants inside the classroom, along with assorted pots to create a greener environment indoors.
I teach children in one of the most expensive cities in the country. My students come from a variety of economic backgrounds in an increasingly crowded inner city environment . However, since they often do well on state tests, and are not considered the most socially or economically disadvantaged in my city, they are often ignored, and our school is frequently passed over for most of the funding opportunities that many other schools enjoy. It is my experience that kids can do anything if you give them the right tools. It is, therefore, my job to get them what they need to challenge then to keep on succeeding.
My Project
Why not create a beautiful place to learn? That's my goal, and I've been doing it a little bit at a time. Now how about our own indoor gardens?
This fall, I will be teaching the 4th grade science curriculum to my inner city students.
One of the basic concepts is in the area of Earth sciences and the growth process and life cycle of a plant. My plan is to integrate and teach environmentalism by showing the children how wonderful it is to grow beautiful and edible things indoors!Using an Aerogarden hydro-planter, a variety of growing pods, some hanging pots and soil, the students will plant different items, but also use seeded pods, that use the Aerogarden growing system. Participating in this process, they will sharpen their observational skills and see how we can manipulate and mimic the outdoors growing process by bringing everything indoors to grow tomatoes, herbs and lettuce. We'll also use the same seeded pods to grow spring flowers in winter! The possibilities are endless.
