My ultimate goal as an English teacher is to not only provide my students with the necessary skills to be successful, but also to encourage my students to develop a love for reading. I truly do believe that reading is breathing and that in order to grow, we do need to read and experience as much as we can.
I believe that one of the keys to fostering a lifelong love of reading is to provide my students with as much choice as possible.
My students in the class my project focuses on have a variety of interests and abilities. My number one concern is that the vast majority do not like to read, so my goal is to change that!
After much research, I have chosen books that deal with relevant and current issues that I feel my students will find interesting and valuable. These relevant themes and the chance for my students to choose what they read will afford me the opportunity to prove to my students that reading can be good for you...and fun!
Students need choice in order to develop an appreciation for reading, and they need to be reading relevant and relatable stories.
My students will be able to choose books that interest them, and they will be able to discuss some of the "tough" stuff with their peers during their book clubs. Choice just might be the key to creating readers!
