My Students

Drawing is necessary in Earth Science class but having colored pencils and gel pens to draw with is exciting. By having these items available for my students, a simple drawing becomes a fun classroom activity. The details of the drawings are easier to see with this variety of color.

I teach students at an at-risk high school.

They must pass my class to graduate so I try to get them interested in class by trying various activities. The high school may be at risk but they will be competing with all other high school students for a place in college. I want to give them every edge possible. I believe a strong foundation in science begins with their freshmen year.

My Project

It is easier to understand the cycles in nature when you draw them. The parts of a cell are easier to understand when you draw and label the parts. Kinetic activity aids in memory. Doing helps the students remember the drawings and therefore the curriculum. When my students draw the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram, they remember it over six weeks later when we review for the final. When we study the constellations, my students use gel pens on black construction paper. It's pretty and a lot more interesting than pencil on white paper. I find that using color helps with my students remembering and adds fun to the act of drawing. I want to be sure my students have colored pencils and gel pens available for their drawings when school begins.

Students love to draw.
