A New Twist on Valentine's Day for Middle School Students!

Help me give my students a different way to think about Valentine's Day, with fresh roses and gift tags.

My Students

We are an authorized public school participating in the International Baccalaureate's Middle Years' Programme. Most of my students come from low income households with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs.

"If you have only one smile in you, give it to the people you love." - Maya Angelou.

My 7th grade students make me smile everyday. This is the year that I want to make them smile every day, and especially on Valentine's Day.

These students are between the ages of 12-13, just when a holiday like Valentine's Day can make or break you. This year, my hope is to encourage everyone in my classes to smile at themselves and each other.

My Project

Every year, I watch Valentine's Day come and go for my middle school students. I see the popular students with armloads of flowers, candy, and decorated lockers. I see some students with nothing.

I want to change the way my middle school students view Valentine's Day this year - 2020.

We will have a party, but the gist of the Valentine's Day event will be "gratefulness". I have purchased some paint pens for our wall-to-wall glass windows where students will fill out who they are grateful for and why. My example will be my younger sister, who shows me how to be brave through her cancer treatments.

I will encourage the students to fill in the blanks. "I am grateful for _______ because they show me/teach me how to __________."

Students will all receive a long-stem rose from me with a message like the one above. "I am grateful for Carlie because she shows me how to be a good friend to others."

Every one of my 90 students can have a new way of thinking about this traditional American holiday - by being appreciated and appreciative.
