Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My ninth graders are enjoying the return to in-person learning and are eager to explore new resources. Approximately 76% of the school's student population is economically disadvantaged. Many struggle with reading, so this project will serve to scaffold their understanding of Shakespeare.
My Project
Most 9th graders are not eagerly anticipating reading Shakespeare. However, I have found a surefire alternative version of "Romeo and Juliet" that I'm certain will hook them. Students will use this graphic novel version of "Romeo and Juliet" as a supplement to the original text. Most of my students struggle with reading, so they will greatly benefit from the vivid illustrations and abridged original text. In addition, the author makes the story relevant to today's teens by creating multicultural characters. These novels will be used in the classroom, but can also be checked out for home use.
