My students need up-to-date informational texts to support the new Common Core standards. Scholastic News & Science Spin subscriptions will correlate with our lessons.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The Shining Stars in 2nd grade constantly crave new information about the world around them. I try to provide experiences that are relatable through visuals, audio, and hands-on activities. I feel that the best way to provoke the love to learn is to make lessons meaningful through connections.
Most of my students struggle with reading and writing.
The use of correct grammar, spelling, and vocabulary can be difficult for them. It is important that students from all corners are exposed to different types of reading materials. My students would really enjoy receiving magazines that reflect their world.
My Project
Students will use the Scholastic News and Science Spin magazines to practice the skills they need to succeed in a 2nd grade world where problem solving and critical thinking is imperative. They will use this informative text to make connections to their existing textbooks and to additional literature. They will also be able to use the magazines to build upon their academic vocabulary and speaking skills. Currently their favorite subject is Science and I hope to encourage them to enjoy Social Studies just as much.
Supporting this project will help up date my classroom and provide my 2nd graders with information that is current and significant to their education and young life.
The fact that they will be given their own magazine to learn from will make these subjects even more fun.
