Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are highly motivated and enthusiastic learners. They are all second language learners and are either children of immigrants or are immigrants themselves. Every student qualifies to receive free breakfast and free lunch. Despite the pervasive lack of time and resources, as well as a language barrier, their parents are always willing to try to pitch in to help in the classroom.
Our school is focused on building a community of caring and academic excellence.
With this in mind, I am determined to make this school year fun and successful for each of my learners. I recognize that I am likely the only adult in their lives who has attended college and I hope to instill in every student a sense of academic pride.
My favorite part of teaching first grade is that every moment is a learning experience. They have so much to learn, and they absorb everything like sponges! They are truly excited to learn to read and their enthusiasm is contagious. Every year I get to watch a new group of students grow and change, and it's what I love most about teaching!
My Project
My first graders are learning how to be active and positive members of our classroom community. This is hard for any six year old, and even harder for my students, as they all speak English as a second language. Part of building a community requires us to have a nice, clean rug to gather around to have community circle and sharing time. Right now, we have an old, dirty, and worn rug.
We’d like a new, bright, clean, and welcoming rug that would fit all of the students, so we feel more comfortable being vulnerable and sharing our thoughts and feelings.
Our rug is the only padded area in the classroom, as the rest of the room is linoleum, so having a fresh rug would mean a lot to my students’ comfort.
Research shows that community circle and morning meetings are crucial for developing young English language learners’ ability to express themselves. Helping them feel comfortable sharing with the class is incredibly important to me, and is one of our school’s missions. Having a new rug would not only be exciting, but would teach the children that their community circle time is valuable.
